Former S.C. racer, promoter dies at 52

Jody Palmer, a former Dirt Late Model competitor as well as a longtime promoter and track official from Seneca, S.C., died Wednesday, Jan. 5. He was 52.

Palmer's first promotions came in 1996-97 for miniseries events at Westminster (S.C.) Speedway, Toccoa (Ga.) Raceway and Hartwell (Ga.) Motor Speedway and continued in 2006-07 as regional director of the Fastrak Racing Series. He left Fastrak to promote Travelers Rest (S.C.) Speedway in 2007 and later promoted the Westminster and Hartwell ovals and most recently was co-promoter at Lavonia (Ga.) Speedway.

Palmer's Late Model racing career hit its peak with 2006-07 Crate Late Model victories at Westminster, Modoc (S.C.) Speedway and Riverside Speedway in Travelers Rest.

Survivors include his wife, Stacey Palmer, and son Cole Palmer. A memorial service is planned for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Lavonia Speedway.
